So his music sounds like a coarse suitcase full of vacation memories – but it’s not hip city breaks or moonlit sailing trips that the zurich guitarist, born in 1972, traces with his tones. Rather, it is journeys of open ears and searching eyes, on which the musician lets himself be inspired by sudamerican-influenced rhythms, tone sequences and motifs borrowed from jazz, as well as earthy pop melodies. Vural is currently considered in critical circles and among fans as one of the best guitarists in the world. He has impressively demonstrated his abilities in acclaimed guest appearances on both sides of the pond. His pieces, which cannot be assigned to any particular genre, are created in a quiet chamber. "Playing around in my rehearsal room i come up with all kinds of extravagant, unorthodox tunes. My music has neither a label nor a name", he writes on his website. The driving force for his creative exploratory urge he provides at the same time: "the search for other ways of playing is natural for me and makes the guitar as an instrument even more exciting for me"."
Vural calls an unusual acoustic guitar, which for him is percussion and melody instrument in one, his own. At concerts, it causes open mouths, astonished faces and satisfied fans in the audience: we are talking about the fourteen-string guitar consisting of two necks, which the guitar maker mitgel noldin had tailored to his body. The result is a dobromandola, a cross between a classical dobro guitar and an exotic mandolin. Between the unusually warm dobro guitar and the mandolin reminiscent of an indian sitar, a wide palette of sound colors emerges.
